Man Charged For Stealing Dog & Demanding Ransom

Leroy White appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where he faced a charge of larceny, after being accused of stealing a Shih Tzu dog from a pet store, and then demanding $10,000 for its return.

The court heard that on April 23, White and another man went into the pet store, and took one of the Shih Tzu dogs. The store’s owner tried to stop them, but they reportedly said that they would return the dog in exchange for $10,000.

A report was made to the police, who subsequently held and charged White. The matter has been put off until tomorrow, so that the investigating officer can provide information about the whereabouts and state of the dog.

36 Year Old Gets 23rd Criminal Conviction

36 year old Jason Anderson, of a Mt. Salem address in St. James, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $3000 when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s court yesterday, after he was found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of cocaine, assault at common law and larceny.

According to reports, Anderson has spent most of his live in and out of prison. The court heard that on February 10, a man parked his car in the vicinty of the City Centre Building, and left the two front windows open. The man reportedly returned to find Anderson inside the car, and when he asked him what he was doing in there, Anderson reportedly told him that he was hungry and looking for money to buy food.

Anderson then reportedly pulled a knife, slashed at the complainant, and attempted to escape. He was chased by security guards and the police, and eventually held and charged.

He was fined $3000 or 10 days in prison for the offensive weapon; six months at hard labour for possession of cocaine and assault at common law; and 18 months at hard labour for larceny.

Policeman Arrests His Own Mother

A policeman reportedly arrested his own mother recently, after she had stolen $52,000 from a betting shop in Bog Walk, St. Catherine, and had eluded police investigators for four days.

According to reports, the woman worked as a cashier and operator of the betting shop’s Supreme Venture’s machine. On January 19, her boss went to check the previous day’s sales, but found there was no cash where it should have been. The matter was reported to the police, who went in search of her; but she was not found. Her policeman son reportedly heard about the theft, caught up with her, arrested her, and handed her over to investigators.

In the Spanish Town Criminal Court last week, she pleaded guilty to the charge of ‘larceny as a servant’. The resident magistrate adjourned the matter until March 23, when she will be sentenced.

Man Begs To Go To Jail So He Can Get Medical Treatment

54 year old Don Taylor, an American deportee of Lucky Hill in St. Mary, was convicted last month of housebreaking and possession of housebreaking implements. When he appeared before the Spanish Town Criminal Court for sentencing, in a heavy American accent, Taylor reportedly said “I did it your honour because I wanted to return to prison for medical treatment.

Taylor, who walks with crutches, has a long list of previous convictions for similar charges, and was sentenced this time around to serve two years for attempting housebreaking, two years for housebreaking and larceny and three months for possession of housebreaking implements. The sentences are to run concurrently, so he will only spend two years in prison.
