In a statement issued late last night, Henry said: “In light of the ongoing attacks on the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP), which continue despite the Prime Minister and I having acted to address the issue, as the line minister, I take full responsibility for the issues which have arisen, and today tendered my resignation as Minister of Transport and Works with immediate effect.” He added: “There is nothing to hide about my stewardship of the JDIP, which is very important to the country, and I look forward to the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.”

Henry also highlighted that he has not resigned as the Member of Parliament for Central Clarendon, and said he will now be focusing more of his energy on his constituency at this time.

A male teacher at the Anchovy High School in St. James, was reportedly stabbed and injured by a 14 year old student at the school yesterday. Classes were immediately suspended after the incident, and classes at the school have been suspended for three days in order to address growing concerns about attacks on teachers by students in recent weeks.

Following a meeting with members of staff earlier this morning, it was decided that stricter disciplinary measures would be put in place at the school. These include complete adherence to uniform regulations, compulsory attendance at all classes, the prohibition of the use of cellular phones by students, and exclusion of students involved in gang activities.

Jamaica’s 8th Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, made a shocker of an announcement earlier today at the Jamaica Labour Party’s Central Executive quarterly meeting. He announced at the meeting today, that he will NOT be seeking re-election at the party’s annual general conference (set to happen in November, 2011), and that he will step down as prime minister as soon as a new Jamaica Labour Party leader has been elected at that conference.

A statement was issued today by the Jamaica Labour Party (through Minister of Information, Daryl Vaz), which included the following:

“Golding said he had planned to lead the party into a second term of government and demit office within two years thereafter. He said the challenges of the last four years have taken their toll and it was appropriate now to make way for new leadership to continue the programmes of economic recovery and transformation while mobilising the party for victory in the next general elections.”

11-year-old Tareek Gregory of Harmons District in South Manchester, was found dead in a back room of his home yesterday evening; his throat had been cut and he also had stab wounds to the side and face. Gregory went missing shortly after arriving home from school, and when his body was eventually found, he was still in school uniform.

Gregory’s 19 year old sister is now being sought in connection with this murder. Reports indicate that she is a disturbed young woman with serious behavioural problems. It is believed that the child was the outlet for his sister’s anger, as she had numerous ongoing quarrels with her parents and other family members.

Coke reportedly plead guilty to one count of trafficking in narcotics and firearm trafficking under the RICO Act. He also pleaded guilty to one count of assault.

Coke now reportedly faces a maximum sentence of 23 years in prison, and prosecutors will reportedly be asking that the maximum sentenced be imposed.

Prosecutors allege that since 1990, Coke controlled an International drug ring from Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston. While cocaine and marijuana were being sent into the US, investigators alleged that guns and other firearms were sent from the US to other drug leaders in Jamaica. Officials said that they had wiretap information, informants and other evidence allegedly linking Coke to drug dealing dating back to 1994.

He will be sentenced on December 8 at 4 p.m.

According to reports, 6 year old Howard Johnson Jr was lured to the back of their father’s house on Nelson Street in Jones Town by his sister, who then stabbed him to death.

17 year old Khajeel Mais, a 6th form student at Kingston College, was reportedly shot and killed last night, after a motorist who had been involved in an accident with the taxi in which Mais was traveling, allegedly fired several shots at the taxi, one of which hit Mais in the head.

The Constant Spring police report that Mais was the sole passenger in a taxi which was involved in a collision with a BMW X5 motor vehicle on Highland Drive in Havendale, St. Andrew, at about 7:30 pm last night. Police say the driver of the X5 apparently exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and fired shots at the taxi, one of which hit Mais in the head. He later died while undergoing treatment at the Kingston Public Hospital.

It’s alleged that the angry X5 driver was upset that his vehicle had been struck, and retaliated by firing shots into the taxi. The driver of the high-end sport utility vehicle sped away from the scene and is still at large. The taxi driver, who escaped injury, was questioned by the police and released.

But the world began to take more serious note after Jamaica totally obliterated the sprints in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, bagging gold in the 100m dashes, the 200m and the men’s 100m sprint at world record clocking to name a few. But, how fast can the average Jamaican run?

During this summer (2011), Red Bull Speed Trap will circle the island to measure the top speed of every Jamaican that wants to come out and run. A speed device will measure the top speed of each runner in the 15 metre “speed zone”. The fastest male and fastest female for each day will win a Puma goodie bag.

Red Bull Speed Trap is unlike any other running competition; all others measure time while the Red Bull Speed Trap measures one’s individual velocity. David Riley, Head Coach of Wolmers Boys School, says he is excited about the innovative twist that is ingrained in the competition. “Measuring speeds in sprinting is truly a great approach as it presents an opportunity to gather data that can be used to deduce a better understanding of why Jamaicans run so fast.

Tyndell told the court [...]

21 year Donnar Tyndell appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing a charge of wounding with intent. The court heard from Tyndell himself that he was so angered when he saw a hicky on his girlfriend’s breast, that he punched her so hard that she lost a tooth.

Tyndell told the court that he was kissing his girlfriend outside the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston when he discovered the mark on her breast. He said he was kissing her neck, but that she tried to prevent him from kissing her breast by saying it would give her cancer. Tyndell was quoted saying “I then stopped to wipe off her face as she was sweating, and then I saw the hicky. I asked what is this! I asked her three times. I was just so angry, I hit her.”

The complainant was told to investigate the cost of a dental bridge procedure for her to replace the tooth, then return to court with the information on June 17 when Tyndell will be sentenced for wounding with intent.
