A female, Tamara Williams, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Friday (November 27), where she was fined a whopping J$80,000 or 60 days in prison for cursing ‘bad words’ and behaving boisterously at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston recently.
Williams pleaded guilty to charges of indecent language and disorderly conduct, and because she did not appear repentant enough to the resident magistrate (Georgianna Fraser), she was fined $40,000 or 30 days in prison on each charge (instead of the normal $2,000 fine).
An 18 year old male student of the Maud McLeod High School in Darliston (Westmoreland), pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding when he appeared before the Whithorn Criminal Court in Westmoreland recently. He was accused of stabbing a teacher during an altercation at the school in June of this year, and following his guilty plea, he was sentenced to nine months in prison at hard labour.
The Court heard evidence that the school boy and his electrical technology teacher had a squabble while class was in progress. The accused reportedly began throwing stones at the teacher, who left the classroom to report the matter to the principal. While on his way to the principal’s office, the teacher was reportedly attached by the accused who stabbed him several times with a knife, resulting in wounds to the neck, abdomen, and hands. Additionally, his liver and spleen were injured, resulting in him being hospitalized.
A report was made to the police, and the student arrested.
A 37 year old man, of a Seaview Gardens address, appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault. He admitted to the court that he fondled the buttocks of three young girls on different occasions, all in the same day, and was remanded into custody for sentencing on December 15.
According to the police, on November 17 at about 2 p.m., a seven year old complainant was in a wholesale store in Downtown Kingston, when the accused walked up and started squeezing her buttocks. The child moved away from the accused and told her parent, who reported the matter to the Kingston Central Police Station.
About two hours later, the accused reportedly went to a meat shop in the same area, and committed the act on another seven year old. The matter was reported to the same police station.
Then, at about 4:45 p.m., the accused went to a fast-food restaurant, also in Downtown Kingston, where he fondled a 10 year old child who was standing at the counter. The child’s mother and aunt raised an alarm, and the accused was arrested and charged.
An American citizen, who was held on October 17 at the Norman Manley International Airport with just over a pound of ganja (marijuana), faced the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court recently, where he told the judge that he needed the ganja for a pain in his testicles. His statement reportedly caused much laughter in the court, and the judge remarked also that she did not know that it was good for that purpose.
The American, Marvin Bailey, from a New York address, was held at the airport, after one pound and 17 ounces of ganja was found in his suitcase. In court, he pleaded guilty to possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking steps to export the drug, and was fined a total of J$18,600. In addition, he was given a mandatory three month jail sentence. Charges against his wife, who was jointly charged, were dropped after it was revealed in court that Bailey had told the arresting officer that his wife was not aware that the drug had been placed there.
Bernard Chambers of Blenheim, Hanover, reportedly died in hospital recently, after he was rushed there when he had a heart attack. The cause of the heart attack? It has been reportedly that the elderly man suffered the heart attack when a nine-year-old boy, who was part of a group of children playing hide-and-seek in an unfinished structure in the yard, jumped out at him and literally frightened him to death.
Doctors reportedly said that the elderly man going into shock/fright could have triggered the heart attack, and that it is in fact possible to be “frightened to death”. The official postmortem results showed that he died of a myocardial infarction (heart attack).
According to police reports, a gay man held down his lover and gouged out his eyes during a jealous fit of rage on Sunday (November 22) in the Calabar Mews residential complex off Red Hills Road in Kingston.
The injured 24 year old man reportedly went to the University Hospital of the West Indies Accident and Emergency Unit to seek treatment, and doctors operated on him and had no choice but to extract the eyes, as they were already partially detached at the time, and the optic nerve badly damaged. According to medical sources, the man will not see again – unless there is a major breakthrough in eye surgery in the future.
The alleged attacker reportedly turned up at the Half-Way-Tree Police Station and is claiming that he had acted in self-defence. He reportedly made a report that his friend had held onto him and was biting him and refused to let go, so he had to attack his eyes in order to disable him. He has been arrested pending further investigations.
According to unconfirmed reports, the injured man had previously been treated (approximately two months ago) at the same hospital for a gunshot wound to his buttocks. During that incident, he reportedly created a stir when medical personnel attending to him had to remove a ‘G string’ underwear off him while treating the wound.
It was high drama in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court recently, when Howard Maxwell, a complainant in a simply larceny case, suddenly found himself facing a charge of carnal abuse against his 18-year-old babymother, Sheena Walcott.
According to reports, Maxwell accused Walcott of stealing $25,000 from him, and she was brought to court on that charge. At the end of this case, Walcott was placed on probation for a year, and ordered to repay Maxwell his money. However, the plot thickened when court officials became suspicious about Walcott’s age and made checks. They found that she recently turned 18, and that her child was one year and 10 months old.
As a result of these findings, Maxwell was arrested and charged with carnal abuse (since he had impregnated Walcott before she was 16 years old). He was immediately taken into custody, and will return to court later this month.
32 year old Papito Miller of Big Bridge in Westmoreland, appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court last week, where he pled guilty with explanation to a charge of unlawful wounding. Miller allegedly slashed his brother, 31 year old Hugh Miller, on the neck with a knife during a fight that started over J$200 from the sale of shrimp.
Papito told the court that he was defending himself from an attack by Hugh which resulted in Hugh being slashed on the left side of the neck.
Papito will return to court on December 4, when his case will be mentioned.
A pastor from a church in Spanish Town, recently had to pay out more than J$100,000 to gang members in the area, after a gun was found hidden at his church yard, and he handed it over to the police.
According to reports, the gun was hidden there by the thugs, but was found when the church yard was being cleaned up. The pastor called the Spanish Town police and the gun was handed over to them, but the gun’s owners were reportedly unamused about the situation and demanded the money as recourse for the loss of the gun. The money was reportedly paid to the gang members.
It was high drama in Burnt Ground, St. Elizabeth recently, when a husband, who was reportedly sick and tired of his wife cooking mackerel for dinner, attacked her with a machete. Fortunately, the woman was not hurt during the incident.
According to reports, the man came home last Sunday, expecting a traditional Jamaican Sunday dinner of rice & peas and chicken. He was however greeted with mackerel and white rice, which caused a clash of words that quickly transformed to a physical altercation. The enraged man was reportedly seen with machete in hand, chasing after his wife. He was unable to catch her, and reportedly abandoned the chase, choosing instead to throw stones and other objects at her.
After the incident, the man reportedly showed neighbors the plate with the food, and complained that he was tired of eating mackerel for dinner.
