322 Police Complaints For 2009 So Far

According to data released by the police last week, there have been 322 public complaints filed against members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and its auxiliaries for 2009 so far.

According to the release, April recorded the highest number of complaints against the police, with 64 being lodged. There were 58 in February and 57 in January.

The data also revealed that 122 persons complained that they were illegally assaulted by the police, while another 100 complained that they were unprofessionally treated by the police.

Additionally, of the 322 complaints, 49 were against police constables, 34 against corporals and 49 against sergeants. Inspectors and special constables had a total of 49 public complaints against them.

Jamaica Broilers Posts Good Results for 2008/2009

The Jamaica Broilers Group Ltd. posted good results for YE 2008/2009, with earnings per share rising 11.85% to J$0.69. The company increased revenues across all segments year-over-year.

Three of Jamaica Broilers’ four segments improved their earnings, with its Poultry segment continuing to account for the largest portion of profits (though its results declined 8.46%). The Feed & Farm Supplies segment saw the biggest rise, jumping 49.43% to JM$665.75M, while their Ethanol segment also improved 38.08%.

Jamaica Broilers’ shares added J$0.07 to close at $3.35 in yesterday’s Jamaica stock market trading.

Attoinette Haughton-Cardenas Arrested On Fraud Charges

Popular defence attorney Attoinette Haughton-Cardenas was arrested yesterday, and now faces a charge of fraudulent conversion. The charge was laid after she failed to answer questions that were posed by Police Fraud Squad investigators with regard to allegations that she failed to turn over monies to a former client of hers.

It is alleged that she had collected in excess of J$6M on behalf of her client, as a result of a medical negligence lawsuit that he had filed against the May Pen Hospital. It is said that Haughton-Cardenas failed to turn over his portion of the award, which was made all the way back in October 2006.

She turned herself in to the police after investigators contacted her about the allegations. She was later offered station bail in the sum of J$500K, and is booked to appear in the criminal division of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s court on July 16.

July 2, 1968 – The youth organization of the People’s National Party (PNP) is founded by Senator P.J. Patterson, a vice-president of the party and also its Shadow minister of youth, sports and community development. The objective of the PNP youth arm is to heighten the political and social awareness of the youth of Jamaica.
