Complainant Claims Obeah – Harry ‘Bungles’ Daley Trial
The corruption trial of Superintendent Harry ‘Bungles’ Daley was held up yesterday for almost half an hour, as the complainant (Tafari Clarke) refused to use a set of headphones belonging to Daley’s defense team, claiming that the lawyers were trying to obeah him.
His stance caused some laughter in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s court where the case was being tried, and came at a time when Daley’s defense lawyer – Valerie Neita Robertson – told him that she wanted him to listen to a CD of himself and offered him the headphones. Clarke reportedly responded saying “I have my own in my bag. I’m not going to put that on my head. I’m not touching that because they obeah you, believe me.”
The defense insisted that he don the headphones and Clarke stoutle refused. Not even the intervention of the presiding magistrate could sway him to change his mind. Clarke then offered that the headphones could be placed near his ear while the recording was being played. Eventually however, there was an adjournment in order to source another set of headphones – which took close to 30 minutes.
